Why Play Matters: Investing in Youth Mental Health Through Play Therapy
For children, play is more than just fun—it is one of the primary ways they communicate, learn, and make sense of the world around them.
Play therapy is an evidence-based approach that helps children express emotions, process difficult experiences, build coping skills, and strengthen relationships in ways that are developmentally appropriate. Through play, children can communicate feelings and experiences that may be difficult to put into words, allowing therapists to better understand and support their emotional needs.
At Family Service Rochester, we see firsthand the growing need for youth mental health services. Our clinicians work with children and families in outpatient, school-based, and in-home settings, helping young people navigate challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, behavioral concerns, family transitions, and other life stressors. As the mental health needs of youth continue to increase, it is essential that providers have access to specialized training and evidence-based approaches that best serve children and families.
That is why we are excited to invest in a two-day play therapy training this July for all clinical staff. The training will be led by Jen Sims, an experienced clinician, educator, and Registered Play Therapist™. Through this training, Family Service Rochester clinicians will strengthen their skills in child-centered play therapy techniques and gain additional tools to help children build resilience, improve emotional regulation, and develop healthier ways of coping with life's challenges.
This organization-wide training reflects our commitment to providing high-quality, trauma-informed mental health services throughout Southeast Minnesota. By investing in our clinicians' professional development, we are investing in the children, families, and communities we serve.
Mental health support during childhood can have a lasting impact. When children receive effective care early, they are better equipped to succeed at home, in school, and in their relationships. Through continued training, collaboration, and community support, Family Service Rochester remains dedicated to helping young people thrive.
We are grateful for opportunities to continue growing our expertise and expanding the tools available to support youth mental health—because every child deserves the chance to be heard, understood, and supported.
