Volunteer Spotlight: the Build Crew
When something needs to be built, repaired, or improved, the Build Crew is ready to lend a hand. This dedicated group of volunteers includes Andy Schram, Dave Molnar, David Winkels, Gary Kerska, Gordon Haubenschild, James Dilling, Jim Van Oosbree, Karen Swatosh, Tim Swatosh, Louie Letendre, Doug Rau, and Louis Behrens, along with fellow crew members Randy Jacobsen, Ken Persons, John Resman, and Wayne Olsen.
Made up primarily of retirees ranging from their early 60s to early 80s, the crew brings together former engineers, IT professionals, healthcare workers, and others who share a passion for helping their neighbors. While few members had professional construction experience when they started, they have built an impressive collection of skills through years of teamwork, mentorship, and hands-on learning.
For many members, volunteering is about finding purpose and giving back. Andy Schram says he has always loved taking things apart, and now he enjoys putting things back together. James Dilling volunteers because he remembers growing up in difficult circumstances and wanted to give back after a lifetime of good fortune. Gary Kerska, after a 38-year career in information technology, wanted to spend his retirement doing something that made a real difference in people's lives. Jim Van Oosbree, one of the crew's longest-serving members, joined around 2008 and is approaching two decades of service.
The Build Crew has completed numerous projects throughout the community, including wheelchair ramps, decks, handrails, stairs, and other accessibility improvements for local residents. One particularly memorable project involved building a deck and wheelchair ramp for a local veteran, helping create a safer and more accessible home environment.
The volunteers agree that one of the best parts of serving together is the opportunity to learn something new. Members often joke that every workday includes a lesson from creative building solutions to discovering the "correct" way to roll up an extension cord. As Louis Behrens points out, everyone on the crew brings unique talents to the table. Whether it's painting, carpentry, problem-solving, or organizing a project, each member has found a role where they can contribute to their strengths.
Beyond the projects themselves, the Build Crew values the friendships and camaraderie they've developed over the years. Crew members enjoy sharing stories, tackling challenges together, and celebrating completed projects. For many, volunteering isn't just about building ramps, decks, or stairways; it's about building community, staying active, and making a lasting difference in the lives of others.
Together, the Build Crew demonstrates that experience, teamwork, and a willingness to help can have a tremendous impact. Their dedication continues to improve lives throughout our community, one project at a time.
