Family Service Rochester is proud to recognize Neal Karels as our August Volunteer Spotlight.

After a successful career that began as a meat cutter and ultimately led to co-owning Rochester Meat Company, Neal sought a meaningful way to give back after retiring and selling his family’s lake cabin in 2025. Inspired by a conversation with a retired classmate who volunteered as a driver, Neal found Family Service Rochester’s volunteer driver program and quickly discovered a rewarding way to serve others.

Neal enjoys helping individuals get to important appointments while building connections along the way. One memorable experience occurred during one of his first volunteer rides, when a client he was taking to physical therapy discovered a surprising connection to one of Neal’s longtime friends from Zumbrota. Neal especially values the conversations he shares with riders, many of whom live alone and appreciate the opportunity for companionship and human connection. Through his volunteer experience, he has been reminded of how fortunate he is and has gained a deeper appreciation for the important role Family Service Rochester plays in helping people remain independent and connected to their community.

Neal and his wife, Cynthia, a retired elementary educator, live in Byron and enjoy spending time with their daughter, grandchildren, family, and friends. When he is not volunteering, Neal can often be found golfing, fishing, grilling, or enjoying time outdoors.
