Family Service Rochester is proud to recognize Bob Gander as our September Volunteer Spotlight!

A lifelong Rochester resident, Bob has spent his life building strong connections within the community he loves. He married his high school sweetheart, Linda, shortly after graduation, and together they have raised three wonderful children. After running a small plumbing business for many years, Bob retired and began looking for a meaningful way to give back. That's when he found Family Service Rochester.

As a volunteer driver and Meals on Wheels delivery volunteer, Bob brings much more than transportation and meals to the people he serves. He understands that for some individuals, his visit may be the only social interaction they have that day. Whether delivering a meal or providing a ride to an appointment, Bob makes it his mission to help each person feel valued, seen, and special.

One of the unexpected joys of volunteering has been reconnecting with former plumbing customers. Bob says "the surprise and smiles I receive when I show up at their door are a reward in themselves and a big reason I continue to volunteer." He looks forward to seeing familiar names on his routes and cherishes the opportunity to brighten someone's day.

Through his volunteer experiences, Bob has learned that small acts of kindness can make a much bigger difference than many people realize. He has also gained a deeper appreciation for the everyday things that are often taken for granted, such as being able to drive, prepare a meal, attend appointments, or live independently.

Bob's approach to service is captured perfectly in a quote he shared with us from the late Dolly Parton, "We cannot afford to look away from those who need our help. If you're in a position to help, you should."

Family Service Rochester is grateful for Bob's compassion, dedication, and commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. Thank you, Bob, for sharing your time, kindness, and heart with our community!
