Volunteer Spotlight: Adapta Gives Back
Ten years ago, Adapta launched the “Adapta Gives Back” program, a heartfelt initiative that has grown steadily each year. Its growth mirrors the passion and purpose their residents feel when they volunteer. Their reasons are simple yet profound:. As one resident put it, “There are people in our community who need our help. Some of them don’t have enough to eat.” Another shared, “I volunteer because it warms my heart,” while others echoed, “I love to give back,” and “It’s been fun getting to know the people that we see every week.”
At Adapta, they believe in celebrating life and community. As a group home agency supporting individuals of all abilities, their days are filled with joy—whether we’re swimming, bowling, camping, catching a movie, playing games and cards, or simply enjoying each other’s company. They also volunteer together. They always have a group serving food at Senior Café on Mondays, deliver Meals on Wheels route every Wednesday and often help with delivering FSR Fresh when they have availability.
One of the most memorable experiences they had came from the Monday crew at Senior Cafe. When a regular guest received a cancer diagnosis, the Adapta team rallied around him—making a card, crafting a blanket, offering hugs, and providing support throughout the year. The connection deepened when he later attended Adapta’s “National Night Out,” allowing more staff and residents to meet him. It was a beautiful reminder of the bonds that form when we show up for one another. Another unforgettable moment was a grocery run just before a blizzard hit Rochester. It may sound unusual, but it was a meaningful adventure. They didn’t want anyone to be snowed in and hungry, and the urgency of the task brought out the best in their team.
When asked what brings them the most joy, they said: “two things stand out: the feeling that we’re making someone’s week a little easier or their day a little brighter, and the deep connections we’ve built with those we serve at our long-term volunteer site.” Through it all, they have learned that kindness is contagious. And perhaps most importantly, “they have learned to be grateful—for the blessings in our own lives and the opportunity to share them with others.”
Family Service Rochester is incredibly grateful for this amazing partnership with the Adapta Crew!
