Volunteer Spotlight: Mary Amundsen
Mary Amundsen is a valued Meals on Wheels volunteer who brings warmth and genuine care to every route she serves. As a retired nurse and counselor, Mary understands the importance of human connection and enjoys spending a few extra minutes chatting with clients, many of whom have limited contact with others. She also keeps a watchful eye on their safety and well-being.
Outside of volunteering, Mary stays active by playing tennis, walking, and working in her yard, often alongside squirrels, deer, rabbits, and turkeys that share her city neighborhood. She enjoys birdwatching, reading historical novels and nonfiction, and writing poetry and essays. Though her family is spread across the country and around the world in such places as Spain, Thailand, and Tokyo, Mary treasures the times when they can all be together.
Mary is proud to help carry on the spirit of kindness and community envisioned by Glenn VanLaningham, first Executive Director at Family Service Rochester, whom she has known since moving to Rochester in 1980.
Thank you, Mary, for all you do for our community!
