Volunteer Spotlight: Les Bigelow
Family Service Rochester is proud to recognize Les Bigelow as our Volunteer Spotlight of the Month!
Les has been married to his loving and supportive wife for over 51 years. Together, they have two daughters with families of their own and are the proud grandparents of five wonderful grandchildren. After retiring from IBM in 2013, Les began a new “career” a few years later — as a dedicated volunteer using his handyman skills to help others.
For Les, volunteering is deeply rewarding. He finds joy in knowing that his skills make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Whether he’s fixing a light switch, replacing smoke detectors, or hauling tree debris with a group, Les approaches every task with compassion and care. Each experience — from a simple thank-you to a warm hug — reminds him of the impact small acts of kindness can have.
Through his volunteer work, Les has learned just how much his talents can improve the lives of others. He says the gratitude he receives from those he helps continues to warm his heart and fuel his desire to give back.
Family Service Rochester is incredibly grateful for Les’s time, skill, and generosity. His commitment to serving others exemplifies the very best of our mission — strengthening the community through compassion and service. Les says it best himself: “I’m thankful to Family Service Rochester for giving me the opportunity to use my handyman skills to improve lives — and I’m looking forward to helping many more.”
