Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Awareness Month and FSR's FARR Program
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Month, a time to shine light on the lifelong effects of prenatal alcohol exposure and to spread the message that FASD is entirely preventable. FASD refers to a range of physical, behavioral, and cognitive challenges that can occur when alcohol is consumed during pregnancy. Children and adults living with FASD may face difficulties in learning, impulse control, and daily functioning.
Family Service Rochester’s Family Advocacy in Recovery and Restoration (FARR) program is designed for women aged 18 and older who are pregnant and/or parenting and navigating substance use. FARR provides free, compassionate, and culturally responsive services. These include one-on-one case management, peer support groups, sober social activities, and recovery maintenance—all with the goal of keeping mothers healthy and children safe.
Case managers walk alongside participants to address a wide range of needs: supporting mental health, fostering child development, connecting families to resources, or helping mothers pursue education and employment. By addressing these needs holistically, FARR strengthens both family resilience and community well-being.
The program’s reach extends beyond direct services. FARR works in partnership with the PROOF Alliance, Minnesota’s leading nonprofit dedicated to preventing prenatal alcohol exposure and supporting those with FASD. Together, they not only serve families but also advocate for broader systems change. In recent years, this advocacy has contributed to increased state funding for prevention programs, amplifying the ability to make lasting impact across Minnesota.
FASD in Olmsted County touches lives in our own neighborhoods. With Minnesota reporting hundreds of babies exposed to substances each year, the work of prevention and recovery is urgent and ongoing. FASD Awareness Month reminds us that prevention is possible. Thanks to programs like FARR, families in Southeast Minnesota don’t have to walk this journey alone. With community awareness and support, we can ensure every child has the chance to thrive and every mother has the resources to recover, rebuild, and restore hope.
