Family Service Rochester looking to hire mental health workers
Updated
ROCHESTER, Minn. - According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, the need for mental health workers is significantly higher than it was before the pandemic. The non-profit Family Service Rochester is experiencing this shortage first hand.
Family Service Rochester says that as mental health care becomes more prevalent, the more therapists and counselors are needed to meet the demand. The organization is looking to hire more counselors and therapists as it works with people struggling with mental health and provides services at-home, out-patient and has professionals in local school districts across southeast Minnesota.
Not only is the need for these professionals on the rise, the reimbursement rates for mental health workers has not increased. Their salaries are traditionally lower for a profession that requires a master's degree.
Family Service Rochester executive director Scott Maloney says, “from my standpoint, the therapy reimbursement rates just do not compare and are not sufficient to meet the needs of both the professionals and the community of individuals that want to seek services.”
Family Service Rochester not only provides mental health services, but also child wellbeing, family stability and senior independence. The non-profit provides more than 30 programs across 12 different counties.
