According to the Minnesota Suicide Mortality, Preliminary 2020 Report, "Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death in Minnesota and tenth nationally."

"Based on preliminary data, 723 Minnesota residents died by suicide in 2020, which is lower than the 830 suicide deaths recorded in 2019." The 2019 deaths were a record high for the state.

The Olmsted County 2019 Community Health Needs Assessment lists suicide as the County's 7th leading cause of death overall. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in the County for persons ages 25 - 44. In 2018 and 2020, Minnesota saw fewer youth suicides and more elderly suicides.

Throughout the month of September, along with other mental health organizations, we will be supporting suicide prevention awareness efforts. What is most and always important to know is: You Matter.

If you, or someone you know, is at risk of suicide call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK (8255), text MN to 741741 for 24/7 crisis support.

If you, or someone you know, is not in crisis but are looking for support with mental health concerns, please consider connecting with a trained mental health counselor. You can connect with ours at 507-287-2010.
