Riverside Central Elementary Walking School Bus

Family Service Rochester is supporting the Riverside Central Elementary School’s Walking School Bus program. We are reaching out to our volunteers with this unique opportunity to assist kiddos getting to safely school this winter.

The Walking School Bus is an innovative way for students to get to and from school safely as a group in areas where a bus is not provided. Students registered in the Walking School Bus program walk to school with a Walking School Bus Leader from Rochester Public Schools and a volunteer.

Volunteers are needed in the mornings through March 2024.

Riverside Central Elementary Walking School Bus:

• The Riverside Central Elementary Walking School Bus departs from Homestead Village Park area at 15th Ave and 8 1/2 Street SE at 8:45am.
• The walk takes 15-20 minutes.
• Volunteers can park near the walking bus stop at Homestead Village Park.
• A Riverside Central Elementary School staff person is present on all days.
• Volunteers are asked for a commitment of one morning a week to keep the schedule consistent.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

1. Must be able to lead elementary school children safely while walking to their designated school in the morning/afternoon in all weather conditions.
2. Communicate clearly and effectively using spoken commands and hand signals when leading students to their designated schools.
3. Exercise judgment, in determining safe opportunities to cross streets with students while following the Walking School Bus route.
4. Maintain focus and avoid disruptions while leading students to school.
5. Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students assigned to a walking school bus.
6. Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which students cross the streets.
7. Oversee the safe conduct of students assigned to the Walking School Bus.
8. Review assigned Walking School Bus route daily and report any issues and concerns to staff in charge.
9. Comply with all safety requirements, and wear all required and approved safety equipment including safety vests.
10. Follow RPS policies and procedures to ensure the safety of all students participating in the walking school bus program.
