Though ADUs have been a topic of discussion for many years, there is a resurgence of interest made even more timely locally because of the Unified Development Code project underway in at the city.

Age-Friendly Olmsted County is interested in ADUs as an option for older adult homeowners, downsizers, and their caregivers. The majority of older adults express a preference for remaining in their homes for as long as possible. ADUs are among the means that may allow them to do so.

Of course, affordable housing in general and senior housing in particular is a topic of great local interest.

The goal of our forum is to leave the audience better informed about ADUs – especially as they relate to older adults; what the current City of Rochester UDC proposes regarding ADUs; and the extent to which the proposed UDC promotes and encourages the creation of ADUs.

The forum will include with panel presentations by followed by discussion. The panelists are:

• Jamie Stolpestad, Founding Partner, Yard Homes, a MN based ADU provider, and Adjunct Professor of Finance at the NYU Stern School of Business. Jamie will look at ADUs through an age-friendly lens including Universal Design and financing solutions for senior and downsizing homeowners.
• Ryan Yetzer, Deputy Director Community Development for the City of Rochester. Ryan will share the ADU and related provisions in current version of the proposed Unified Development Code, as well as the status of the review and approval process.
• Samar Jha, Senior Legislative Representative, AARP Government Affairs, formerly the Director of Government and Public Affairs, Greater Philadelphia Association of Realtors®. Samar will discuss policy and legislative issues related to ADUs as well as AARP’s interest in ADUs and related AARP community preferences data.
• Dave Beal, Age-Friendly Olmsted County Coordinator at Family Service Rochester will moderate.
