A Volunteer Story: Denim, Diamonds, & Dice

What do denim, diamonds, and dice have in common? Raising money for Meals on Wheels of course! Denim, Diamonds, and Dice, FSR’s annual casual gala and casino-themed fundraiser raises money to help defray the cost of home delivered meals for lower-income seniors. First held in 2019, the planning committee created a night of casual fun encouraging casual denim attire or sparkle and diamond bling. Attendees try their hand playing casino games with local celebrity dealers.

The all-volunteer planning committee beings their work months ahead of time. After retiring, Melanie Asay sought a way to get involved in the Rochester community and started volunteering with Meals on Wheels. After eight years of delivering Meals on Wheels, Melanie joined the fundraising committee. Melanie, who likes to work “behind the scenes,” was new to fundraising and the event-planning world. After four years, she’s a seasoned veteran. Although she focuses her time and attention on the silent auction, Melanie expressed that the entire committee works together to make this event a great success.

“Every penny earned goes right back to FSR’s Meals on Wheels program,” Melanie noted. Since inception four years ago, Denim and Diamonds has raised $123,242.10.
