Testimonials

I had a diverse and rich intern experience with FSR and the Right at Home Solutions team and perhaps the best part was the people. FSR is a well-led organization; I was both challenged and supported at the same time. And while I felt stretched in my experience, I was not set up to fail. I had ample opportunity in supervision to ask questions, receive feedback, and process the experience. In addition, team colleagues were supportive and available to help when needed. There was a lot to learn in terms of documentation, procedures, and the rhythms of the organization; but I felt supported enough to just "jump in" and enjoy the learning. And, perhaps most importantly, I felt as though I was an active part in improving the quality of life for a number of clients.

A Master Level Foundation Student Experience

When I first started my internship at Family Service Rochester through the Domestic Violence Response Team, I had high expectations. I was expecting to learn a lot and grow as a student and future social worker. Now, near completion of my internship I can say that even with my high hopes, my internship experience has far exceeded my expectations. Not only have I learned a lot and grew as a student and future social worker, I have also had invaluable experiences, which I know will shape the way I practice social work throughout my career. I believe I learned something important each and every day I was at my internship. I learned a lot about the best ways to work with clients, however I also learned what a supportive, hard-working, yet fun work environment can look like. The Domestic Violence Response Team allowed me to always feel comfortable and valued as a member of the team. All of my ideas have been encouraged, which has helped me to feel confident in my decisions and my part in working with clients. I always felt challenged, yet knew I could also ask for help if I felt unsure. Being surrounded by such passionate people has been an incredible motivator in continuing to grow to be the best social worker I can be. With my internship ending, I feel I have been given so many incredible tools for my future, and I appreciate each and every day I have been at my internship.

A Bachelor Level Student Experience

I was an intern with Family Service Rochester in the Family Access Center Program. Coming into this internship I was nervous as I was going into a new agency, in a new city for me. This internship was for my bachelor’s degree in Social Work, so I did not have much previous experience in the social work field. During my first week with the Family Access Center I was so warmly welcomed by everyone that I came into contact with, that my nervousness quickly went away. With the Family Access Center I had the opportunity to work side-by-side with the program coordinator on her everyday work as well as get trained in as a monitor for their supervised parenting times. Outside of the Family Access Center, Family Service Rochester gave me the opportunity to visit and meet with other programs within the agency. I was able to shadow different programs, some of which being, P.A.C.E, Family Involvement Strategies, Gage East, as well as sitting in on Child Protection consults. Another beneficial opportunity that Family Service Rochester does is that any interns and new staff members get to meet with the supervisors of all of their programs. This gives you a chance to meet others within the agency as well as learn about what each program does and the services that they offer. Throughout my time with Family Service Rochester in the Family Access Center I was able to learn many beneficial lessons and skills for my upcoming social work career.
